First Sorrowful Mystery

The Agony in the Garden

He was offered because it was His own will, and He opened not His mouth: He shall be led as a sheep
to the slaughter, and shall be dumb as a lamb before His shearer, and He shall not open His mouth.
(Isaias 53:7)

Then He saith to them: "My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay you here, and watch with Me."
And going a little further, He fell upon His face, praying, and saying: "My Father, if it be
possible, let this chalice pass from Me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt."

And there appeared to Him an angel from Heaven, strengthening Him. And being in an agony, He prayed
the longer. And His sweat became as drops of blood, trickling down upon the ground.
(Matthew 26:38-39; Luke 22:43-44)

Almighty God, grant that the merits of the Passion of Thine only begotten Son may bring us new
strength, for our own weakness brings nothing but failure in the face of so many difficulties.
Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
