The First Sorrowful Mystery The Agony in the Garden
CHAPTER 10
The Arrest of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
And He said to them:
"It is enough: The hour is come.
Behold the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man shall be
betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise up, let us go. Behold, he that will
betray Me is at hand.
Pray, lest you enter into temptation."
And while He was yet
speaking, Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great
multitude of soldiers and servants sent from the chief priests and the scribes
and the Pharisees,
with lanterns and torches and swords and clubs. And he that betrayed Him went
before them, and had
given them a sign, saying: "Whomsoever I shall kiss, that is He. Lay hold on
Him. Hold Him fast,
and lead Him away carefully."
And when he was come,
immediately going up to Jesus, he saith: "Hail, Rabbi." And he drew near to
Jesus, for to kiss Him. And Jesus said to him: "Judas, dost thou betray the Son
of Man with a
kiss?" And he kissed Him. And Jesus said to him: "Friend, whereto art thou
come?''
Jesus therefore,
knowing all things that should come upon Him, went forth, and said to them,
"Whom seek ye?" They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus saith to them: "I
am He." And Judas
also, who betrayed Him, stood with them. As soon therefore as He had said to
them, "I am He;' they
went backward, and fell to the ground.
Again therefore He
asked them, "Whom seek ye?'' And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth:' Jesus answered:
"I have told you that I am He. If therefore you seek Me, let these go their
way." That the word
might be fulfilled which He said: "Of them whom Thou hast given Me, I have not
lost any one."
And they that were
about Him, seeing what would follow, said to Him, "Lord, shall we strike with
the sword?" Then they came up,
