The First Sorrowful Mystery - The Agony in the Garden

                                                                                    CHAPTER 1

The Jewish Leaders Conspire Against Jesus Christ. Judas Agrees to Betray Our Lord. The Last Supper.
It came to pass that Jesus said to His disciples: "You know that after two days shall be the Pasch
and the Son of Man shall be delivered up to be crucified."

Then were gathered together the chief priests and scribes into the court of the high priest, who
was called Caiphas. And they consulted together, that by some wile they might apprehend Jesus, and
put Him to death. But they feared the people, and said, "Not on the festival day, lest perhaps
there should be a tumult among the people."

And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve. And he went to the
chief priests and the magistrates, and said to them: "What will you give me, and I will deliver
Him unto you? " Who hearing it were glad, and they covenanted to give him thirty pieces of
silver. And he promised. And from thenceforth he sought how he might conveniently betray Him in the
                                                                            absence of the multitude.

Now on the first day of the Azymes [i.e. the feast] of the unleavened bread, on which it was
necessary that the Pasch should be sacrificed, Jesus sent Peter and John, saying: "Go, and

prepare for us that we may eat the Pasch." But they said, "Whither wilt Thou that we go and prepare? " And
Jesus said to them: "Go ye into the city, and behold, there shall meet you a man carrying a
pitcher of water. Follow him into the house where he entereth in, and say to the good man of the
house: 'The Master saith to thee, 'My time is near at hand; with thee I make the Pasch with My
disciples. Where is the refectory, where I may eat the Pasch?"' And he will show you a large dining
room, furnished. And there prepare ye for us." And
