And after the space, as it were of one hour, another 14 certain
man affirmed, saying: "Of a truth , this man was also with Him, for he is also a Galilean!" And
Peter said, "Man, I know not what thou sayest." And they that stood by said to Peter : "Surely
thou also art one of them, for even thy speech doth discover thee!" But he began
to curse and to swear, saying: "I know not this man of Whom you speak!" One of the servants of the
high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) seeing him, said: "Thou also art one of
them! Did I not see thee in the garden with Him?" But Peter again denied and said: "O man, I am
not!" And immediately, as he was yet speaking, the cock crew again. And the Lord turning looked on
Peter. And Peter remembered the word that Jesus had said unto him: "Before the cock crow twice,
thou shalt deny Me thrice." And going out, he wept bitterly.

The high priest therefore asked Jesus of His disciples, and of His doctrine. Jesus answered him:
"I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in the synagogue and in the Temple,
whither all the Jews resort, and in secret I have spoken nothing. Why asketh thou Me? Ask them who
have heard what I have spoken unto them. Behold, they know what things I have said."

And when He had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying,
answerest Thou the high priest so?" Jesus answered him: "If I have spoken evil, give testimony
of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou Me?"

And Annas sent Him bound to Caiphas the high priest.

14 An other: Observe here, in order to reconcile the four Evangelists, that diverse persons
concurred in charging Peter with being Christ's disciple, till at length they brought him to
deny Him thrice. I ) The portress that let him in , and afterwards seeing him at the fire,
first put the question to him; and then positively affirmed that he was with Christ. 2) An
other maid accused him to the standers-by, and gave occasion to others there present to
renew the charge against him, which caused the second denial. 3) Others of the company took
notice of his being a Galilean, and were seconded by the kings man of Malchus, who affirmed he
had seen him in the garden. And this drew on the third denial.
