Fifth Sorrowful Mystery
The Crucifixion
In Thy sight are all
they that afflict Me; My heart hath expected reproach and misery. And I looked
for one that would grieve together with Me, but there was none: and for one that
would comfort Me,
and I found none.
(Psalm 68:21)
And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified Him
there; and the
robbers, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. And Jesus said:
"Father, forgive them,
for they know not what they do."
And he (one of the
robbers) said to Jesus: "Lord, remember me when Thou shalt come into Thy
kingdom." And Jesus said to him: "Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be
with Me in paradise".
Now there stood by the
Cross of Jesus, His Mother, and His Mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and
Mary Magdalen. When Jesus therefore had seen His Mother and the disciple
standing whom He loved, He
saith to His Mother: "Woman, behold Thy son." After that, He saith to the
disciple: "Behold thy
Mother."
And about the ninth
hour Jesus cried with a loud voice saying: "My God, my God, why hast Thou
forsaken Me"? Afterwards, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished,
that the scripture
might be fulfilled, said: "I thirst". And Jesus crying out with a loud voice,
said: "Father, into
Thy hands I commend My spirit".
(Luke 23:33-34, 42-43, 46; John 19:25-28; Matthew 27:46)
Almighty and eternal God, Who didst will that our Savior should
become Man, and suffer on a Cross as a model of humility for all mankind;
mercifully grant that we
may improve by the example of His patience, and deserve to share in His
Resurrection. Through the
same Christ our Lord. Amen.
