The First Sorrowful Mystery The Agony in the Garden

CHAPTER 3

Judas Sets Out to Betray Our Lord. Christ Institutes
the Sacraments of the Eucharist and of Holy Orders.

When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit. And He testified, and said: "But yet
behold, the
hand of him that betrayeth Me is with Me on the table," And whilst they were eating, He said,
"Amen, amen I say to you, one of you that eateth with Me is about to betray Me,"
The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom He spoke. And they being very
much troubled, began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one: "Is it I, Lord?" But He
answering, said: "One of the twelve, who dippeth his hand with Me in the dish, shall betray Me. And
the Son of Man indeed goeth, according to that which is determined, as it is written of Him; but
yet woe to that man by whom the Son of Man shall be betrayed. It were better for him if that man
had not been born,"
And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. And
Judas that betrayed Him, answering, said: "Is it I, Rabbi?'' He saith to him: "Thou hast said it,"

Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore
beckoned to him, and said to him: "Who is it of whom He speaketh ?" He therefore, leaning on the
breast of Jesus, saith to Him: "Lord, who is it?" Jesus answered: "He it is to whom I shall reach
bread dipped," And when He had dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: "That which thou dost, do
quickly,"3

3 That which thou dost, do quickly: It is not a license, much less a command, to go about his
treason, but a signification to him that Christ would not hinder or resist what he was about; do it
as soon as he pleased: but Christ was both ready and desirous to suffer for our redemption.
