The Fifth Sorrowful
Mystery - The Crucifixion
CHAPTER 18
The Crucifixion of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
And they came into the place that in Hebrew is called Golgotha, which being
interpreted is
the place of Calvary.
And they gave Him wine to drink mingled with gall [myrrh]. And when He had
tasted, He would not
drink.
They crucified Him there. And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know
not what they do."
And it was the third hour.20
And there were also two
robbers led with Him to be put to death, [whom] they crucified with Him,
one on the right hand, and the other on the left, and Jesus in the midst. And
the Scripture was
fulfilled, which saith: 'And with the wicked He was reputed."
And Pilate wrote an
inscription of His cause also, and he put it upon the cross, over His head, in
letters of Greek and Latin and Hebrew: "THIS IS JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF
THE
JEWS." This title therefore many of the Jews did read, because the place where
Jesus was crucified
was nigh to the city. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: "Write
not, 'The King of
the Jews; but that He said, 'I am the King of the Jews."' Pilate answered: "What
I have written, I
have written."
