The Second Sorrowful Mystery - The Scourging at the Pillar
CHAPTER 15
The Scourging of Jesus.
Now upon the solemn
festival day, the governor was accustomed to release unto the
people one of the
prisoners, whomsoever they demanded. And he had then a notorious prisoner that
was called Barabbas.
Now Barabbas was a robber, who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for
a murder committed
in the sedition, was cast into prison.
And when the multitude
was gathered together, they began to desire that he would do as he had
ever done unto them. And Pilate answered them, and said: "You have a custom that
I should release
one unto you at the Pasch. Whom, therefore, will you that I release unto you:
Barabbas, or Jesus
that is called Christ?" For he knew that the chief priests had delivered Him up
out of envy. But
they said, "Barabbas."
And as he was sitting
in the place of judgment, his wife sent to him, saying: "Have thou nothing to
do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things this day in a dream
because of Him." But
the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people, that they should ask for
Barabbas, and take
Jesus away.
The governor said to
them again: "Whether will you of the two to be released unto you?" Then cried
they all, saying: "Not this man, but Barabbas!" And Pilate again answering,
saith to them: "What
will you then that I do with the king of the Jews?" But the whole multitude
together cried out
again, saying: "Crucify Him! Let Him be crucified! Away with this man, and
release unto us
Barabbas!"
And Pilate again spoke
to them, desiring to release Jesus, saying: "What evil hath He done?" But
they cried out the more, saying: "Crucify Him! Crucify Him! Let Him be
crucified!" And he said to
them the third time: "Why? What evil hath this man done?
